On May 28, 2026, Sofable by Mantellassi celebrated the centenary of Mantellassi 1926, the historic brand from which our project originated, in Pistoia.
Exactly a century since its founding on April 8, 1926, in Quarrata, and five generations of the same family at the helm of the manufacture. The celebratory evening was held in collaboration with Pistoia Italian Book Capital 2026 and with the patronage of the Tuscany Region.
The celebration was attended by the workshop's skilled workers, past and present collaborators, local institutions, and friends who have accompanied the company over these decades. A precise choice: to celebrate one hundred years with the people who built this company, not with a simple representative event.
Making the evening even more memorable was the Emanuele Muzio Youth Orchestra, which provided live accompaniment for the celebration.
One hundred years in summary
- 1926 — Upholsterer Macario Mantellassi lays the foundations for the future company in Quarrata.
- 1947 — Carlo Mantellassi, Remo's son, joins the company at fourteen and leads its expansion in the post-war period.
- 1960s-1970s — Investments in design, brand, and technology. Mantellassi becomes one of the most recognizable names in the upholstered furniture district.
- 1980s — Nicola Remo Mantellassi, fourth generation, joins the company.
- 1990s — International breakthrough: Europe, Middle East, Japan, America, and Eastern markets opened by Roberta.
- 2002 Relocation to Gello: new production model and a network of artisans around the company.
- 2019 — A showroom of over 1,500 sq m opens at the Pistoia factory, where production is also based.
- Today — The centenary, celebrated on May 28 in Pistoia by Roberta Mantellassi and her children Marco, Giulio, and Carlo, who now lead the company.
Who leads the company today
We are in the fifth generation, with Roberta Mantellassi together with her three children Marco, Giulio, and Carlo at the helm of the historic Tuscan company. They have carried on the Pistoia workshop, the showroom network, and the birth and development of Sofable by Mantellassi in Italy and abroad.
What one hundred years mean in an artisan workshop
Production is entirely carried out in the Pistoia workshop, where every sofa, armchair, or bed is custom-built: frame, padding, stitching, choice of fabrics and leathers. It is the same working method carried forward since 1926, updated in materials and technologies but not in principle: the piece is born from the hands of its maker, and the buyer can see it being made. One hundred years are not a commercial milestone. They are proof that an artisan supply chain can withstand wars, economic crises, globalization, and generational transitions if the people who compose it remain at the center.
The centenary book
For the centenary, we published a book dedicated to the company's history and the people who built it: skilled workers, upholsterers, carpenters, seamstresses, collaborators of yesterday and today. The volume was created in the year that Pistoia is the Italian Book Capital, a title conferred by the Ministry of Culture.
